Alan tried to back out of his deal with Grady to frame Bill for Lizzie's kidnapping, but Grady had already set their plan in motion by planting evidence to indicate Bill was the kidnapper. Lizzie pleaded for an unconscious Bill to wake up. Grady destroyed evidence (his own footprints) after going with Lizzie, who went to the hole she fell into looking for something to clear Bill.
