TV Guide Canada Interview
TVG: You were a part of the 1980’s glory era of soaps. Is it depressing to be a part of the new realities of the genre? What’s your take on the health of soaps?
TR: It’s in a lot of trouble. The networks are aware of this. The good news is ABC doesn’t want to cancel their soaps. Soaps have had a question mark attached to them in the past twelve months. What’s happening now, however, is the economic crisis the country is facing. I always see opportunity in chaos and there’s an incredible opportunity in reviving soaps by simply using storylines that have a foundation in hope. By re-adjusting our stories to focus on the dramatic situation America finds itself in written for adults in a respectful, entertaining, and enlightening manner is what the audience needs right now. People are going to be stressed and depressed, and if history is any indication, soaps have always flourished in hard times.
Tristan isn’t just incredibly handsome and capable of melting hearts with his velvet voice, he is extremely intelligent and forward thinking. I think the vlogs also show how much he genuinely thinks about things and how quick-witted he really is. All along he’s been stating facts about soap history/future, and giving his opinion about the biz. Now maybe people are paying attention?
I think TR is spot on regarding the fact that “storylines that have a foundation in hope” will become (even as we speak of this) a drawing factor, especially during difficult times. People want heroes upon whom they can rely. Having conflict within a well-done storyline is needed, and so is having faith that the hero will overcome all the odds facing him/her. TR is right about how the public has historically flocked to stories of hope. Back in the day, the notion that Robert and Anna kept hanging in there together, fighting Faison come-what-may, left me feeling bolstered against my struggles of the day. Within that story of adventure, there was an underlying message of hope. There are enough depressing stories (real & soap) out there, so I hope TR gets his point across to TPTB and that they will really listen.

Great interview. Thanks for letting us know Buck.
I'd love to see Robert on GH, but I'm paranoid at what they'd do to him. Very conflicted.
The Holly vs Anna question? "Oy vey" Everybody duck when that one's answered.

I honestly liked 'em both and Katherine too.

Happily not a shipper and will thoroughly enjoy R&A while they're on my screen.
